Olympic bronze medalist Gagan Narang waved the chequered flag at the second edition of the Airtel Indian Grand Prix at the Buddh International Circuit on Sunday.

There was speculation till Saturday of filmstar Hrithik Roshan and even Sports Minister Ajay Maken waving the chequered flag but the rumours were put to rest after Jaypee made it official on Sunday morning that the Olympic medalist would get to do the honours.

The officials at JPSI told TOI that Hrithik had declined at the last moment. "Hrithik had attended one of our F1 after-parties at LAP last night but communicated his inability to come to the race," the official said.

Last year, the choice for the first Grand Prix was not very difficult, as Bernie Ecclestone himself had invited Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar to wave the chequered flag. This year, there was double Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar, or silver-medalist Vijay Kumar who were also present at the race.

The JPSI official said, "Narang was the only one who had confirmed his presence. We couldn't wait any longer and gave him the honour. Of course, we would have preferred Sushil or Vijay to do the honours but they hadn't confirmed they would come."

Gagan Narang had won the bronze medal for the mens 10m air rifle shooting event at the London Olympics 2012. He also clinched four medals each at the Commonwealth Games Melbourne 2006 and at the Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010. He competed at the Olympics in Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008.
